How to turn your skincare routine into self-care

How to turn your skincare routine into self-care

Picture this: you’re sitting in front of your vanity with a fresh face. You’re about to head to bed so you start applying your night time skincare products one by one.

Once you’re done, you slip into bed, scroll on your phone for a few minutes before heading off to dreamworld for your nightly slumber.

But, did you know, there’s a better way to make the most out of those few minutes? We tell you how to turn your skincare routine into a self-care ritual that’ll soothe your skin and your mind.

Tip 1: Skincare is self-care

If you’ve already got a skincare routine, morning and night, give yourself a pat on the back. You’re doing a good job, sweetie. 🥰

This is the first step to a self-care skincare routine. Looking after your skin, with however many products, is taking care of yourself. Those precious few minutes can help your skin to stay hydrated and refreshed, ready to face the next day.

Tip 2: Take a few extra minutes for skincare to absorb

According to a 2020 Nielsen report, we spend over 13 hours a day looking at screens. Sure, 8 hours of this may be for work, but this still leaves a significant amount of time soaking up entertainment through a screen.

Our point is, you can afford to take a few extra minutes out of this to dedicate to your skincare/self-care routine.

One of the most common skincare mistakes we make is not allowing enough time for products to sink into our skin and absorb before we layer the next product on.

Our skin also isn’t a flat surface – there are many pores, small hairs and fine lines that make up the curves and contours of our face. When applying serums and oils, spend a little extra time massaging these products in small, circular movements with your fingertips or a facial roller, focussing on areas of pigmentation or fine lines. If your skin is sensitive, you can pat or press these products in, making sure you’ve covered all the areas you wish for the product to absorb.

We generally tend to carry a lot of stress in our face – especially our brows and jaw. Slow down, take some deep breaths, enjoy the present moment and give your temples and side of your jaw a gentle rub while you wait for your skincare products to sink in.

Tip 3: Combine skincare with self-care activities

We’re all busy people, and sometimes, we need to multitask. Why not combine self-care with something you enjoy?

For instance, our hair masks take as little as two minutes to work. This means two minutes solely dedicated to yourself - two minutes of gentle stretches, flossing (make your dentist proud) or drinking some water. It’s up to you what you do, but make these minutes revolve entirely about you.

Some of our favourite combos of skincare and self-care are facial masks while meditating (all you need is five minutes), hand cream while watching our favourite shows (post-mani treat) or moisturising while catching up on a podcast.

So, skincare vs. self-care – is there a difference? Yes, but you can also easily combine the two so they go hand-in-hand. At the end of the day, you are the most important person in your life and you should treat yourself as such. We all deserve a few minutes to ourselves each day so make them count with these three tips.
