Curly hair 101: How to look after curly hair

Ever since we launched our haircare range, we’ve had so many of you get in touch to tell us how amazing your hair feels after using our sulphate-free, natural products. And while we do have a large range suitable for most hair types, we’ve never had one for curly hair… until now.

Whether wavy, curly or coily, it all requires a slightly different method of care. Here are some tips we discovered while creating our new curly girl approved Curl Define Shampoo and Conditioner.

1. Wash only when needed

You don’t want to wash your hair too often, and even less if you have curly or coily hair. Washing is a means to get rid of dirt, dust and oil, but see how far you can stretch it before your hair starts to look greasy. If you wash your hair too often, you might strip your hair and scalp of the natural oils you’ll need for healthy hair.

When washing curly hair, massage the shampoo into your scalp. Then use your fingers to gently comb (not rub) through the rest of your hair, untangling gently if needed. Make sure you rinse your shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water, as too hot water can dry out your hair.

2. Condition with purpose

Curly hair tends to be more dry than oily, with the exception of your roots. This is because the curls prevent hair oils from travelling down the hair shaft as easily as straight hair does.

Every time you shampoo your curly hair, you’ll need to replenish moisture with a conditioner – one specifically made for curly hair.

3. Dry gently

Curly hair tends to get frizzy very easily. While our Curl Define haircare has been developed to tame down the frizz with ultra-hydrating coconut and monoi oils, there are a few methods of drying you’ll want to avoid too.

Instead of your regular towel, opt for a soft cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel to dry your hair instead. Try squeeze the water out instead of rubbing.

We know it’s tempting, but avoid heat via a blow dryer and don’t mess it around with your fingers. Run a wide-toothed comb through gently and part your hair how it normally sits. Let air-dry so your curls will develop their natural definition.

If you find the ends of your hair start to look a little frizzy as it dries, you can apply a small amount of our Curl Define Conditioner as a leave-in treatment to add some moisture back in.

4. Use the right products

Using the right products for curly hair is especially important. Our new Curl Define Shampoo and Conditioner is specifically made for curly hair. When developing the formula, we knew which ingredients to add to help reduce frizz and add moisture without weighing down the hair, leaving your curls beautifully defined.

These curly products are silicone-free so won’t weigh your hair down, and also sulphate-free and won’t strip your hair of moisture.
